THE 4TH WITOLD LUTOSLAWSKI INTERNATIONAL COMPETITION FOR YOUNG CONDUCTORS - BIAŁYSTOK- 22-27 OCTOBER 2006
REGULATION
GENERAL REMARKS
1. The 4th Witold Lutoslawski International Competition For Young Conductors is aimed at the introduction and the promotion of young conductors entering on the musical scene across the collation of realizations of orchestral works and doing honour best with the prizes provided for hereby with the regulation.
2. The Competition will take place 22-27 October 2006.
I. CONDITIONS OF PARTICIPATION
1. The competition is open to conductors who on 22nd December, 2006, will be under the age of 35 years.
2. Applications for participation in the Competition should be sent till 30th May, 2006.
3. The candidate will be notified about being qualified for the Competition by 15th July, 2006.
4. Candidates qualified for the Competition should report to the Competition Office on 22nd October, 2006, before 3.00 p.m. and show their identity cards or passports.
5. The number of candidates admitted to participate in the Competition will be limited to no more than 30 candidates.
6. The Competition Office shall bear the costs of accommodation and full board for all the contestants for the time of their participation in the Competition.
7. The participant, who due to important reasons retarded his own arrival, can be admitted to the interrogatory on the end of the first stage.

II. JURY
1. The candidates taking part in the Competition will be marked by the Jury consisted of Polish and foreign conductors.
2. Internal work regulations will be established during the first meeting of Jury members before starting the hearings.
3. The appraisal made by members of the Jury is confidential.
4. Verdicts issued on the basis of appraisal of Jury members are final.
III. COMPETITON PROCEDURE
1. The 4th Witold Lutoslawski International Competition For Young Conductors takes place in three stages.
2. Participants of the Competition shall conduct the Orchestra of Podlasie Opera and Philharmonic – The European Center of Culture in Bialystok, whereas they may use their own orchestra materials.
3. No more than 12 candidates will be admitted to the second stage.
4. No more than 6 candidates will be admitted to the third stage.
5. From the first stage of the Competition participants will perform in alphabetical order, starting from the letter drawn on the 22nd October, 2006, at. 3.00 p.m.
6. All hearings, as well as the prize-winners' concert can be filmed, recorded or transmitted by radio and television, recorded on discs or cassettes and broadcast by mass media with the Competition Management's consent – without payment to the participants.
7. The hearing of all Competition stages is open to the public.
IV. THE REPERTOIRE
STAGE I (23rd – 24th OCTOBER 2006)
From the given repertoire the participant of the 1st stage shall choose three works from group A and three works from group B, whereupon he draws one work from each group.
No more than 30 minutes are provided for preparing the drawn work with the orchestra.
In cyclical works or those consisting of many parts – if the Jury abandons determining the specific part of the work – the participant of the Competition makes the choice at his own discretion.

J. Strauss - Overture to the operetta “Die Fledermaus”
GROUP B
J. Haydn – Symphony No. 104 in D major
W. A. Mozart - Symphony No. 35 in D major KV 385
L. van Beethoven – II Symphony in D major, op. 36
L. van Beethoven – III Symphony in E-flat major op. 55
F. Mendelssohn–Bartholdy – IV Symphony in A major op. 90
F. Schubert – VIII Symphony in B minor “Unfinished”
STAGE II (25TH OCTOBER 2006)
From the repertoire given below the participant shall choose three works from group C. All works from group D are obligatory. Then he draws one work from each group.
No more than 45 minutes are provided for preparing the drawn work with the orchestra.
In cyclical works or those consisting of many parts – if the Jury abandons determining the specific part of the work – the participant of the Competition makes the choice at his own discretion.

L. van Beethoven – III Piano Concerto in C minor op.37
F. Chopin – Piano Concerto in E minor op. 11
STAGE III (26th OCTOBER 2006)
From the repertoire given below the Jury will choose two works for preparation by the participants. Information about chosen works shall be announced to the public after results of stage II.
No less than 1-hour rehearsal with the orchestra is provided for preparing the chosen works.

I. Strawiński – Ballet Suite „The Firebird“ (1919)
C. Debussy – “La Mer”
The Final Concert will take place on 27th October 2006.
V. PRIZES AND AWARDS
1. Three prizes and three awards shall be awarded for the Competition finalists:
1st prize – Golden Violin Clef and 5.000 EURO gross
2nd prize – Silver Violin Clef and 3.000 EURO gross
3rd prize - Bronze Violin Clef and 1.000 EURO gross
awards - diplomas and presents.
2. The 1st Prize Winner will be entitled to participation in the 8th Grzegorz Fitelberg International Competition for Conductors in Katowice, 15 – 25.11.2007.
3. Basing on the final number of points, the Competition Jury may change the system of prizes and awards, providing that the overall sum of prizes and awards remains unchanged.
4. Regardless of statutory prizes, extra prizes might be donated by institutions or individuals.
5. The handing over of prizes and awards shall take place during a formal Prize - Winners' Concert Ceremony that will end the 4th Witold Lutoslawski International Competition For Young Conductors.
6. The programme of the Prize - Winners' Concert shall be established by the Competition Jury in agreement with the performers.
7. The Competition Prize – Winners will have the possibility of guest conducting symphonic concerts of leading Polish orchestras.
